Historic Warwick Photo Uncovered!

1925-picture.jpg

Dick Rankin walked into my office yesterday with this amazing photograph of the Warwick. Dick said he got it from Chris Butler’s photo collection. Many thanks to both Dick and Chris for loaning us this fantastic picture. I’ve been looking for pictures of the theater but have found nothing. This is a treasure! Here are some interesting highlights of the picture;  From the look of the car I’d say it was taken around the mid 1920’s.   The shingling on the building looks pretty light so I’m thinking the building is pretty new.   It has concrete sidewalk in front of it unlike the cobblers shop next door. I see a telephone pole next to the car but no street lighting. I don’t know when electricity came to

Marblehead.

The left flag on the building is the American flag. The first 3 letters on the flag on the right are W A R. I assumed the next 4 are W I C K.  The canopy is the very different from what’s there now. But everything above the canopy is still there today. What I find most interesting are the store fronts on either side of the theater entrance. The stores probably go back to the rise in the roof of the building which houses the super structure for the theater space. I guess you walked under the canopy, through an open hallway to the theater entrance, you bought a ticket and maybe a snack and went in. The store on the left repairs boots for 5 cents. The sign on the door says it’s for rent so I guess 5 cents wasn’t enough to cover the rent.  We have no information on the store on the right.  The signs at the theater entrance say  Mon Tues, How Uncle Sam Prepares; for what I have no idea.  If anybody out there in ‘Header land has any further information for us, please contact us through our website or call me at 781-631-3233. I’d like to know who built it, when, how it got it’s name and what the

Warwick reference means. If there are any other pictures floating around, I’d love to have them, especially from the 50’s and 60’s. Thanks, Michael
